John Brault is a seasoned healthcare executive with expertise in provider network and population health management. Having served in the payor, provider, and consulting arenas, with a proven track record in negotiating fee-for-service and value-based/risk transfer arrangements, John possesses a unique perspective on healthcare delivery and reimbursement methodologies.
Mr. Brault has drawn on his more than two decades of experience as a financial operator, strategist, and negotiator to develop innovative contractual arrangements that drive top line revenue growth while achieving synergy between historically adversarial partners. As the Provider Network Lead for Aetna’s New Jersey Market, he championed the decentralizing of Aetna’s VBP contracting and performance management functions into the local markets, bringing VBP into the mainstream of Aetna’s provider network functions. During this time, he led the establishment of Aetna’s first Joint Venture Medicare Advantage plan, in conjunction with three health systems in North Jersey. He also negotiated the first global capitation agreement held by Aetna in the NJ market.
As SVP of Payor Strategy and Chief Executive Officer for the Partners in Care MSO/IPA, he partnered with the clinical leadership of our 1000+ physician IPA, and administrative staff at Continuum Health Alliance to standardize care delivery and prepare for full risk. Deploying a team of practice transformation coaches, Partners in Care was able to achieve top performance ranking for both Horizon BCBS’ ACO program as well as one of the top ranked MSSP ACOs in NJ by CMS.
An impassioned advocate for value-based reimbursement methodologies, John firmly believes in their potential to address the imbalance of high-cost, poor-quality care prevalent in today’s healthcare landscape. He emphasizes the importance of payor support for provider partners in transitioning to value-based models, stressing the need for a gradual progression towards high performance in a full-risk environment. With a demonstrated history of establishing partnerships and fostering collaborations among diverse stakeholders, John excels at building teams capable of executing innovative strategies to drive positive outcomes. He is poised to contribute his extensive expertise, leadership, and commitment to achieving sustainable population health goals.
John holds a Master of Health Administration from Seton Hall University in South Orange, NJ, a Master of Business Administration from the Pennsylvania State University, Smeal College of Business, and Bachelor of Science in Health Administration from the University of Scranton, in Pennsylvania. He has served as the President of the NJ Chapter of the Healthcare Financial Management Association, as a member of the New Jersey Hospital Association Managed Care Constituency Council, the New Jersey Primary Care Association CFO Council, and in various capacities within the New Jersey Association of Health Plans, where he has participated in advocacy efforts at both the state and national levels.
